Reduced IT risk. Improved operational resilience.
Designed and strengthened physical and network infrastructure for a specialist UK technology business supporting defence-sector requirements, including resilient power, structured cabling, disaster recovery and a server-room environment developed with future MoD security accreditation in mind.
The organisation was a fast-growing specialist technology business developing solutions for defence-sector customers, including work associated with the UK Ministry of Defence.
As the business expanded, its IT environment needed to mature quickly. This included not only conventional business systems and cloud services, but also physical infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly demanding security and assurance requirements.
The challenge was to build strong foundations early: resilient infrastructure, appropriate segregation, documented dependencies and a physical environment designed with future defence accreditation requirements in mind.
I worked across both the logical and physical IT environment, including network design, structured cabling, backup and disaster recovery, critical power protection and the development of the company's core server-room infrastructure.
A significant part of the work involved supporting MoD-related requirements and working with SCIDA principles and assurance expectations. This included reviewing cabling and physical infrastructure requirements and designing the server-room environment so that it could support the controls expected of a future higher-assurance defence environment, subject to the appropriate formal accreditation and approval processes.
I also considered resilience, equipment layout, connectivity, power, documentation and operational dependencies as part of the overall design rather than treating the server room as simply a place to install equipment.
The result was a more structured technology environment with stronger physical and operational foundations, capable of supporting the organisation's continued growth and increasingly demanding customer requirements.
"Resilience isn't just about having backup equipment. It comes from understanding how infrastructure, security, power, connectivity and operational dependencies all fit together."
